Cycle 14 PIMMS Effective Area Public Information

PIMMS effective area (EA) files are built using model observations (OBSIDs) with standard/default detector and SIM_Z configurations with the CIAO 4.4 routines mkarf for imaging aimpoint cases and mkgarf for gratings configurations, using the most current CALDB input files (CALDB 4.4.7). The following table gives the input CALDB file information used by mkarf or mkgarf to generate the respective effective area files (as ARFs) for the CY13 (N0013) and CY14 (N0014) review cycles. Plots of the PIMMS effective areas may be viewed at the PIMMS Effective Area Data page. You may also use the automated Chandra Effective Area Viewer.

PIMMS Input Data and Procedure Changes for Cycle 14:

CalDB Input File Uprades (since CY13):

  1. The HETG GREFF (grating efficiency) for the +/- first orders has been modified to correct the HEG-MEG cross calibration in CalDB patch version 4.4.6.1 (01 Dec 2011). These corrections are split between the HEG and MEG such that the MEG-LEG cross calibration is not changed. The corrections in the MEG are in the energy range above 1 keV, and are at the 10% level or less. The remaining corrections are are applied the HEG GREFF.

  2. The HRC-S QE (quantum efficiency) has been upgraded as well to version N0011, so there will be some measurable change in the four HRC-S configuration effective area spectra, as is shown in the plots on the PIMMS index page and the effective area viewer.

  3. The HRC-S QEU (quantum efficiency uniformity) was upgraded to a set of annually time-displaced QEU files (all version N0006) which takes into account the time-variablity of the QE across the array. This affects the AIMPOINT HRC-S EA, and the three LETG/HRC-S PIMMS EAs (zeroth order, first order, and higher orders summed.)
  4. The LETG GREFF (grating efficiency) for orders 2-7 has been upgraded yet again since the last cycle. The orders 2 through 7 greff values have been reduced by 1 to 9% relative to their previous values, which has affected the LETG/HRC-S Higher Order summed efficiencies ("LETGHI" in PIMMS.)

Parameter Input Changes (versus CY13 inputs):

  1. Imaging aimpoints: The slow optical axis drift (with respect to the Science Instrument Module (SIM)) has continued with the progress of the mission. Hence the default position for an imaging observation strikes each detector in a slightly different place. (See the changes in the CHIPX, CHIPY positions in Table 1 below.) We include default pointing Y- and Z-offsets for ACIS-I and ACIS-S, to optimize the local EA calculation for where your source is likely to appear (unless a proposer specifies a different pointing offset). The change in position presents a slightly different QE and mirror vignetting in the CIAO modeling that is done to calculate PIMMS EA's.

  2. ACIS CONTAM time-delay parameter: The CIAO ARF- and GARF-generating routines employ a time-delay option in the "detsubsys" parameter specification, wherein a TT date value in seconds may be entered to set the date for the time-dependent CONTAM calculations. For Cycle 14 the value is 484963266.184, which corresponds to UTC date 15 May 2013. For Cycle 13 the value was 453427266.184, corresponding to 15 May 2012. This affects all and only ACIS configurations. For ACIS-S aimpoint position EAs and grating zeroth order EAs, the change is at most -6% at the Carbon Edge, and significantly less elsewhere.
