High Energy Astrophysics Division (HEAD) assists and promotes the advancement of research and the dissemination of knowledge about high energy events, particles, quanta, relativistic gravitational fields, and related phenomena in the astrophysical universe.  HEAD also promotes the coordination of this research and knowledge with other branches of science. The division holds Division Meetings each 12-24 months, as well as sessions within the meetings of the American Astronomical Society.  Each year, HEAD awards the Rossi Prize for recent original research in High Energy Astrophysics.  Approximately every 18 months, HEAD also sponsors the Schramm Award for High Energy Astrophysics Science Journalism which is awarded at the HEAD Division Meetings.  The electronic HEAD Newsletter is published twice yearly. Items of Current Interest:

  • Three new members were elected to the HEAD Executive Committee. Cole Miller, Vicky Kalogera, and Ron Remillard were elected to two-year terms as members of the HEAD Executive Committee. Congratulations to all three! And thanks to retiring members Rita Sambruna, Bryan Gaensler and Tod Strohmayer.
  • At the HEAD Business meeting during the January AAS meeting in Seattle, the Chair, Steve Murray, announced that the 2007 Bruno Rossi Prize is being awarded to Neil Gehrels and the Swift Team for for major advances in the scientific understanding of gamma-ray bursts. These include groundbreaking observations of the location of short gamma-ray bursts, and the discovery of enormously bright X-ray flares in the early afterglows.
  • The Tenth HEAD meeting will be held in Los Angeles from March 31-April 3, 2008 at the Omni Hotel. Please mark your calendars!
  • The May 2007 HEAD Newsletter is now available online.
