Title: CDFS: Solar Wind Charge Exchange and the SXRB

PI Name: Bradford Wargelin

A large fraction of the soft X-ray background (SXRB) arises from solar wind charge exchange (SWCX) between wind ions and neutral gas surrounding the Earth and in the heliosphere. The CDF-S program, comprising observations from near Solar Maximum (1999 and 2000) and Solar Minimum (2007, 2010, and 2011), provides a uniquely rich and informative data set for investigation of SWCX and the SXRB. The parameter space sampled by these observations (solar wind ion composition and stratification, viewing geometry through the heliosphere and geocorona, etc.) will permit determination of the true cosmic (non-SWCX) SXRB in the CDFS and significantly improve our ability to model and isolate local and cosmic contributions to the SXRB.

Title: CDFS Study of stellar X-ray Cycles

PI Name: Nicholas Wright

The aim of this proposal is to identify long-term X-ray coronal cycles in low-activity old-disk stars in the Chandra Deep Field South. The unprecedented depth and long baseline of the observations will allow both short- and long-term variations in the coronal X-ray emission of solar- and late-type stars to be studied, allowing analogues of the 11 year solar cycle to be identified. Long-term X-ray variations have been identified in only five stars other than the Sun, and only two of those show clear cyclic behavior. This proposal can greatly increase this number, producing a significant sample of main-sequence stars with identified X-ray activity cycles. This will provide important constraints on the form of stellar dynamos and the level and variability of stellar activity.

Title: CDFS: Massive Starburst Galaxies in the Early Universe: The Starburst/AGN Connection

PI Name: Seth Johnson

To determine how today's massive galaxies formed and evolved, we require a detailed understanding of AGN and star formation and how the two effects coincide in the early universe. However, current observations are not enough to fully constrain evolutionary models. We propose use of the 4Ms CDFS data, combined primarily with imaging data at 1.1 mm and future LMT data to characterize the AGN and star formation contributions in high redshift massive starbursting systems. The full 4Ms CDFS data is necessary to constrain the physical parameters of AGN and starburst systems to better than 20% accuracy. This will provide the deepest look into AGN and star formation interaction possible until deeper/higher-resolution millimeter and sub-mm observations begin with the LMT and ALMA in 2011.

Title: Measuring AGN black hole masses in the Chandra Deep Fields

PI Name: C. Urry

We propose to estimate the black hole masses of ~500 AGN in the Chandra Deep Fields using X-ray variability. The normalized excess variance of AGN X-ray light curves has been shown to be proportional to the characteristic break frequency in the power spectral density. This break frequency is tightly correlated with black hole mass and accretion rate (which can be approximated from the bolometric luminosity). The Deep Fields are well suited for this study due to the long baseline and extensive multiwavelength coverage. This will constitute one of the largest homogeneous samples of AGN black hole masses (including narrow-line AGN), and will allow for studying the evolution of black hole masses through cosmic time as well as the relation between black hole mass and host galaxy properties.

Title: CDFS 4 Msec Stacking: Tracing the History of Obscured Black Hole Accretion

PI Name: Ezequiel Treister

We propose to take advantage of the 4 Msec CDFS Chandra observations to trace the black hole accretion history of the Universe by stacking samples of individually-undetected galaxy populations. We have obtained accurate redshifts using 32 optical-through-IRAC filters for 25,000 galaxies with R<26. These data will allow us to perform rest-frame X-ray stacking to look for the Fe Kalpha emission line, used as a tracer of black hole growth. This technique can account for even the most obscured (Compton thick) accretion. We will further focus on heavily-obscured AGN candidates selected from the very deep multiwavelength data available in the CDFS. We will study mid-IR excess, radio and sub-mm sources, both individually and by stacking to obtain a high signal-to-noise ratio spectrum.

Title: CDFS: Tracing the Evolution of Groups and the Intragroup Medium from z=1 to the Present Day

PI Name: John Mulchaey

The 4 Msec Chandra data of the CDFS will allow the first detailed spatial and spectral study of the intragroup medium at high redshift. We have used the existing Chandra and XMM-Newton data in the CDFS to identify a sample of 52 X-ray groups out to z=1. We will combine the 4 Msec Chandra data with our spectroscopic follow-up program of these groups to: 1) measure the L-T relationship for groups at high redshift, 2) study the evolution of cool cores, gas metallicity and entropy, and 3) study the formation of the brightest group galaxy. The 4 Msec Chandra data will be the only dataset deep enough to probe typical X-ray groups at high redshift, providing a unique opportunity to study how the intragroup medium has evolved over the last 8 billion years.

Title: CDFS: Public Source Catalogs and Active-Galaxy Spectral Constraints

PI Name: William Brandt

We propose work using the 4 Ms Chandra Deep Field-South (CDF-S) that will (1) deliver high-quality source catalogs, identifications, photometric redshifts, and associated data products for the more than 680 detected sources, and (2) derive X-ray spectral constraints upon distant AGNs. Our methodology for source catalog production, source identification, and photometric redshift estimation will be improved from that already used successfully for the 2 Ms CDF-S and CDF-N. Source catalogs will be promptly made public and published. Our spectral analyses will provide the best available measurements of X-ray absorption properties, continuum shapes, and intrinsic X-ray luminosities for deep-field AGNs; these will be critical for almost all future studies of these sources.
