SUMMARY OF SEQUENCE NUMBER 600111

Title: M101: DIFFUSE EMISSION, EXTENDED OBJECTS AND POINT SOURCES

Observer: KUNTZ

Subject Category: Normal Galaxies

Seq: 600111 ObsId: 00934

Long-term Plan bin: 23-Mar-2000

ABSTRACT

We propose a multi-purpose observation of M101, a nearby face-on spiral galaxy with low foreground NH, fulfilling three goals: 1.) The study of the global distribution of diffuse coronal gas. The high resolution of the AXAF ACIS will allow removal of point sources to significantly deeper levels than possible with ROSAT. Thus we can obtain better measures of the diffuse gas at 1/4 keV and 3/4 keV, and place stronger limits on the existence of diffuse gas at 1.5 keV. 2.) The study of extended structures such as superbubbles, allowing resolution of structures on hundred parsec scales. 3.) The study of the distribution and luminosity functions of point sources, such as supernova remnants (~2.4e36 ergs/s), low-mass X-ray binaries (~2.8e36), and super-soft sources (~1.3e38).
