HRC Secondary Science Anomaly on Day 2005:349

CXCDS processing review of data from ObsID 7244 indicated peculiar results for the dead-time records during the first 4 ks of the observation. The peculiar dead-time values were caused by anomalously high rate scalar values. An example of the scalar rate for the total MCP trigger rate is shown in the plot below with the anomalous points labeled. TLEVART data
These anomalous values occur only sporadically and only in the second of two samples reported in a secondary science block.

Further examination of the serial-digital secondary science records shows that prior to the anomalous scalar rate data there were housekeeping voltages and temperatures containing anomalous data. None of the strictly digital housekeeping data (e.g. bi-levels or commanded HV steps) displayed anomalous values. All bi-level, passive-analog, and active-analog "engineering" telemetry appeared nominal.

The secondary science data are the first 72-bytes of serial-digital data from the HRC at the start of a major frame when the HRC is configured for next-in-line telemetry or from the start of a "science-frame" when the HRC is configure for observing-mode telemetry. The layout of the secondary science is given at section 2.1 of SAO-HRC-TLIST-98-313. Anomalous data were observed for MSIDs 2C15PALV through 2FE00ATM. The MSIDs 2CE00ATM and 2CE01ATM do not appear when in next-in-line mode and when in observing-mode they do not exhibit as many obviously bad values as the preceding MSID (FE00ATM) or the following scalar rate data.

Bad secondary science housekeeping data observed on day 2005:349.
MSIDs from 2C15PALV to 2FE00ATM

A "*" under the byte number indicates where the housekeeping value is
KNOWN to be bad

A "x" in the MNF (minor frame) column indicates that the HRC secondary
science data were telemetered in next-in-line mode, so the bad data
may have been spread over multiple minor frames

There is the possibility that the anomalous data is generated due to a thermal problem. The temperatures in the HRC during the time interval with anomalous data on day 2005:349 were among the highest seen. An examination of data during times with similarly high temperatures also show anomalous housekeeping data values. However, a complete search for additional periods of anomalous data has not yet been finished to demonstrate that it does not occur at lower temperatures.

No obviously bad primary science telemetry (event data) is seen.
