Abstract

We present the first results from XMM-Newton observations of the Subaru Deep Survey region. The XMM-Newton observations consist of a mosaic of 7 overlapping pointings which constitute a deep X-ray survey of a $\approx 1.3$ sq.deg. region of the high-latitude sky with exposure time of 100 ksec in the central field and 50 ksec in the flanking fields.

To date four of the pointings have been carried out, all but one with full exposure. Deep optical and near-IR imaging has been obtained for parts of this survey region with the INT 2.5m, ESO 2.2m and Subaru 8.3m telescopes. In addition, spectroscopic identifications have been obtained for around a dozen X-ray sources.

This paper will present these initial results, concentrating on the X-ray/optical/IR properties of the overall source population and the the spatial distribution of X-ray sources that are uniquely probed by this large-area survey.
