Workshop Focus and Structure

The workshop focus is the future of Chandra science as envisioned by the Chandra community in multiple areas. The SOC-selected topics and themes encompass fields with potential for major future advances, including synergies with current and future multi-wavelength ground-based and space-based facilities, and the concept of a "big data" archive expected to accumulate more than two decades' worth of Chandra X-ray imaging and spectroscopy.

The workshop will cover 3 days of science sessions, starting on Tuesday afternoon and ending on Friday at lunchtime; there will be no parallel sessions. There are two types of oral presentations (invited and contributed) as well as poster presentations. The meeting will have long coffee breaks with refreshments in the poster room to allow browsing and interactions with the poster authors.

There will be special sessions on Wednesday and Thursday afternoons with panel discussions on (i) synergies in the coming decade between Chandra and other missions and observatories, and (ii) key projects Chandra can and should accomplish in the next ten years. Additionally, the CIAO science team will organize a lunchtime session on Wednesday with the theme of X-ray Data Analysis for the Next Decade. These sessions will include presentations from the panelists with discussion and Q&A from the audience.

The CXC is solicting interest in a one day CIAO workshop on August 15, 2016 just prior to the start of the Chandra Science for the Next Decade workshop. Depending on the level of interest, the workshop may be extended into the morning of August 16. The CIAO workshop will be tailored to the attendees, but usually consists of a few talks in the morning with ample time in the afternoon hands-on with CXC experts to assist individuals with their specific data analysis questions.

Possible topics for the talks include:

  • Introduction to X-ray astronomy
  • Advanced CIAO
  • Topics in Chandra Calibration
  • Intro or Advanced Sherpa
  • Intro or Advanced MARX
  • Intro or Advanced ds9
Users interested in attending the CIAO Workshop are asked to fill out the CIAO Workshop Interest Form. Interested users will be contacted with more details closer to the date of the workshop.
