Cycle 11 PIMMS Effective Area Public Information
Return to: PIMMS Index
Released as of 15 JAN 2009
This is to be the final PIMMS release for CYCLE 11!
The PIMMS effective areas have been updated to include a new and better model of the HRMA axial effective area, which applies to all configurations. (We have elected NOT to upgrade the ACIS Optical Blocking Filter contamination model, which is under further investigation.) The new hrma files is named "hrmaD1996-12-20axeffaN0008.fits" and is being released with CalDB 4.1.1. An incumbent adjustment of the HETG grating efficiencies is also being released, to maintain the HEG and MEG 1st-order cross-calibration accuracy.
The update to the HRMA model involves a more self-consistent application of small contamination layers on the iridium mirror surfaces, and uses a different method of weighting the HRMA pre-launch calibration data. The result of the change is an improvement in high-temperature cluster modeling with the HRMA/ACIS-S and HRMA/ACIS-I configurations, with derived plasma temperatures more consistent between these two internal configurations, and better cross-calibration with the XMM telescope as well.
PIMMS effective area (EA) files are built using model observations (OBSIDs) with standard/default detector and SIM_Z configurations with the CIAO 4.1.1 routines mkarf for imaging aimpoint cases and mkgarf for gratings configurations, using the most current CALDB input files (CALDB 4.1.1). The following table gives the input CALDB file information used by mkarf or mkgarf to generate the respective effective area files (as ARFs) for the CY10 (N0010) and CY11 (N0011) review cycles. Plots of the PIMMS effective areas may be viewed at the PIMMS Effective Area Data page. You may also use the automated Chandra Effective Area Viewer.
PIMMS Input Data and Procedure Changes for Cycle 11: The update of the HRMA axial effective area to version N0008 (see the notice above) is a change which affects all configurations at this time. There is a reduction in the overall effective area of about 9% in the 0.06-2.0 keV range, which then monotonically decreases with increasing energy till about 5-6 keV. At higher energies, the variation between the old and new HRMA models is less significant.
-
Imaging aimpoints: The slow optical axis drift (with respect to the Science Instrument Module (SIM) has continued with the progress of the mission. Hence the default position for an imaging observation strikes each detector in a slightly different place. We include default Y- and Z- offsets to optimize the chipx and chipy positions for ACIS-I and ACIS-S. The change in position presents a slightly different QE and mirror vignetting in the CIAO modeling that is done to calculate PIMMS EA's.
-
ACIS CONTAM time-delay shift: For each cycle the future OBF contamination level is projected for the mid-point of the anticipated observation period. For CY11 the time and date are set for 15 May 2010, whereas for CY10 it was set for 15 May 2009. This produces at most a 1.5% decrease in the aimpoint effective area, mainly near the Carbon K-edge, from CY10 to CY11.
Additional Note on the OBF contamination model: The current model is known to have systematic uncertainties which we recommend the proposer take into account in feasibility determinations. Please see POG Section 6.5.1 for more information.
-
The HETG +/- first-order grating efficiencies have been updated to adjust for the new HRMA effective area upgrade. The changes are somewhat significant (but less than 10% at any energy). The DIFF plots show this effect, along with the new HRMA EAs.
-
The HETG/ACIS-S and LETG/ACIS-S configurations The script "fullgarf" has been upgraded as of May 2008 to include the ACIS dead-area correction for the FI chips in the ACIS-S array. (Chips S0, S2, S4, and S5.) The effect is a 2-4% decrement of the EA across the chip from the readouts to the top ends of the columns. While this was included in the procedure for CY10, the CIAO 3.4 version did not apply them correctly in Grating EA's (i.e., using the fullgarf script). This has been remedied in the latest implementation.
