Item 1. Chandra Anniversary
============================
Sunday, July 23
Chandra turned 7 earlier today (counting only from the launch date and not the
years it took us to get there).
It continues to be a truly "Great Observatory" and lots of thanks and credit
are due to those who built the observatory and those who now operate it and
support the world-wide community of users.
I hope that you all enjoyed the day and that we will
be able to mark many more Happy Birthdays for Chandra.
Harvey Tananbaum

Item 2. "Extragalactic Surveys" Workshop
=========================================
We are pleased to announce "Extragalactic Surveys", a workshop
sponsored by the Chandra X-ray Center. The workshop will be held
November 6-8, 2006
in Cambridge, Massachusetts
at the Harvard Faculty Club
The Workshop webpage
http://cxc.harvard.edu/xsurveys06/
provides information and links for Registration/Abstract Submission.
The early Registration deadline is Aug 30
GOALS OF THE MEETING
- to identify the most pressing science questions that
arise from, or can be answered by extragalactic X-ray surveys
- to debate the most profitable and efficient
strategies to answer those questions with today's facilities and tools
- to identify the most pressing priorities for the future
- to communicate and disseminate the results of ongoing X-ray
surveys, their multiwavelength followup, analysis and modelling
- to provide a forum for discussion and debate between those
conducting X-ray surveys and the broader astronomical community
SCOPE OF THE MEETING
INCLUDE
- extragalactic X-ray sources - galaxies, AGN, galaxy clusters
- science from current X-ray observatories
- serendipitous surveys deep, wide, contiguous, archival
or if pointed samples, N>30
- spatial correlation studies, large and small scale structure
- number counts, CXRB, population synthesis
Workshop emphasizes X-ray-selected objects, but not exclusively.
(e.g., stacked X-ray study of EROs).
EXCLUDE
'surveys' of sources in nearby galaxies e.g., M31, Milky Way
small (N<30) pointed samples of previously known objects
deep IGM absorption ('WHIM') studies

Item 3. Next Chandra Users' Committee Meeting Oct 17, 2006
===========================================================
The CUC meets twice yearly and serves to ensure broad-based community
input to CXC functions, providing a mechanism for influencing the
Chandra X-ray Center. The CUC membership, email addresses, and a list of past
recommendations to and reports from the CXC can all be found on the
CUC webpage at
http://cxc.harvard.edu/cdo/cuc/index.html
The next Chandra Users' Committee Meeting will be held October 17,
2006 at the CfA in Cambridge. If you have concerns about Chandra
policies or direction, please contact the CUC members, whose emails
are shown at the above webpage.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Item 4. Chandra Mission Planning Computer Specialist Position
==============================================================
The CXC would like to call the attention of interested candidates to the
availability of a position with the Chandra Science Mission
Planning Team. Beyond a strong interest in hands-on participation in
the operation of a major space observatory, qualifications include a
solid background in physics, math, astronomy, and computing. Positions
of this kind have often been an excellent learning opportunity for
recent holders of bachelor's degrees looking for several years'
experience before proceeding to graduate school, but have also been
filled by persons with a variety of other backgrounds and planned career
paths. If interested, please respond to the announcement for Job #26-05
at
http://cfa-www.harvard.edu/hr/postings/index.html
or contact Bill Forman (wforman@cfa.harvard.edu) or Jan Vrtilek
(jvrtilek@cfa.harvard.edu) directly.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Item 5. Chandra Cross-Calibration Webpage
==============================================
A new cross-calibration web page is now available at:
http://space.mit.edu/ASC/calib/crosscal/index.html
This web page provides a discussion of cross-calibration work
relating the Chandra X-ray Observatory to other X-ray missions,
particularly XMM-Newton. In summary, Chandra HETGS and LETG/ACIS-S
data agree with fits to XMM PN data to within 10% from 0.5 keV to 7
keV. Other quantitative comparisons are in progress.
Much of this web page was developed in cooperation with the XMM-
Newton calibration team; see results at
http://xmm.esac.esa.int/external/xmm_sw_cal/calib/cross_cal/index.php
