Item 1. CIAO 3.0 Released - 6 August 2003
        =================================

The Chandra X-ray Center (CXC) is pleased to announce that version 3.0
of CIAO ("Chandra Interactive Analysis of Observations") and version
2.23 of CALDB are now available for download from:
http://cxc.harvard.edu/ciao/download_ciao_reg.html

They will also be copied shortly on the European mirror site at:

CIAO 3.0 is a major "infrastructure" release. Several libraries (most
notably the datamodel) have been completetly rewritten. Many CIAO
libraries are now accessible via S-Lang modules, which significantly
enhance scripting capabilities within CIAO. Also, CIAO 3.0 has been
ported to MacOS X, opening CIAO up to Mac users.

CIAO 3.0 also introduces a number of new tools and provides significant
enhancements to existing software.
There is also a new Sherpa Web site (http://cxc.harvard.edu/sherpa/) and
a new layout for threads.

  The CIAO highlights page http://cxc.harvard.edu/ciao/highlights.html
provides additional details.

For complete information on this release, please see the full Release
Notes (http://cxc.harvard.edu/ciao/releasenotes/)

In tandem with CIAO3.0 is the release of the Chandra Calibration
Database CALDB 2.23
Release Notes are available at:
http://cxc.harvard.edu/caldb/Release_notes/CALDB_v2.23.txt

Several tools require CALDB2.23 therefore it *must* be downloaded and
installed (or upgraded from an earlier version) to run CIAO 3.0.

CIAO3.0 is distributed for the following platforms:
Solaris 8
Linux Redhat 6.2 and 8
Compaq Alpha/Tru64 Unix 5.1A
Mac OS X 10.2.6

  More details at http://cxc.harvard.edu/ciao/download/platforms.html

As always please send questions and requests for enhancements to the
CXC HELPDESK (http://cxc.harvard.edu/helpdesk/)

CIAO3.0 is a collaborative effort between the SAO/CXC Science Data
Systems, the SAO/CXC Data Systems, and MIT/CXC personnel.

Item 2. 5th Chandra/CIAO Workshop - Cambridge,USA - 29-31 October 2003
         ==============================================================

              First Announcement
           5th Chandra/CIAO Workshop
   ------------------------------------------
             29-31 October 2003
   ------------------------------------------
Chandra X-ray Center, Cambridge Mass, USA
   ------------------------------------------
   http://cxc.harvard.edu/ciao/workshop/

Following the success of the previous Chandra/CIAO workshops and the
recent release of CIAO version 3.0 , the
Chandra X-Ray Center (CXC) is announcing the fifth in a series of
workshops aimed at helping users to work with the Chandra Interactive
Analysis of Observations (CIAO) software.

CIAO is the CXC software developed for the analysis of Chandra data.
However, CIAO is non-mission specific (apart from a few instrument
tools). More info on CIAO can be found at http://cxc.harvard.edu/ciao/.

This workshop will be based on CIAO 3.0 which was released on 6
August 2003, or any software patch available at the time. A summary
of the features in the CIAO3.0 software can be found in the release
notes (http://cxc.harvard.edu/ciao/releasenotes).

The fifth workshop will be held at the Center for Astrophysics in
Cambridge, MA (USA) on 29-31 October 2003. Further workshops will be
organized depending on demand.

Details of the program will be sent to registered participants and
posted on the CIAO Workshop web site at http://cxc.harvard.edu/ciao/workshop

   The program will include:

TALKS:

Introductory and Advanced Talks on X-ray Data Analysis and Statistics
Calibration and Aspect Issues Related to Data Analysis
Beginner and Advanced CIAO talks and demos
Advanced sessions on specific topics: grating analysis, extended source
analysis, etc.

HANDS-ON SESSIONS:

Workstations will be available for participants to gain hands-on
experience using CIAO on Chandra data.
Members of the CIAO team will be on hand to solve problems.
Sample Chandra data sets will be provided for attendees who do not have
(or do not wish to use) their own Chandra data sets.

Potential participants may look at all the handouts made available to
the participants during previous workshops on the workshop Web site
Handouts and Presentations page.

We are working to allow the largest possible attendance and we are
expecting to accept the first 25 to 30 registered participants.

If you would like to participate please use the online registration
form at http://cxc.harvard.edu/ciao/workshop/

Item 4. CHANDRA POSTDOCTORAL FELLOWSHIPS COMPETITION
        ============================================

The Chandra X-ray Center (CXC), is
pleased to announce the seventh competition for
the Chandra Postdoctoral Fellowship Program, in cooperation with host
institutions throughout the United States. The primary objective of the
Program is to provide opportunities for postdoctoral research on problems
that are broadly related to the scientific mission of the Chandra X-ray
Observatory and compatible with the interests of the Host Institutions. This
program is open to applicants of any nationality who earn
doctoral degrees between January 1, 2001 and September 1, 2004 in astronomy,
physics, or related disciplines. The Fellowships are tenable at any U.S.
institution where Chandra-related research can be carried out.

The Fellowship is initially for two years, with the expectation of a
third year, contingent upon performance and available funding. Subject
to the availability of NASA funding up to 5 Chandra Fellows will be
appointed this year, through grants to United States institutions.

The Call for Proposals for the Fellowship Program, which includes
detailed Program policies, application instructions, and forms,
is available on the World Wide Web at
http://cxc.harvard.edu/fellows/Chandra_fellow.2004.html
Alternatively, the same information may be
obtained upon request to the above address.
An application includes a cover form,
a research proposal, letters of reference, a curriculum vitae, and
other relevant materials as detailed in the instructions.
Applications should be sent to the attention of Chandra
Fellowship Program Office at the address below.

The application deadline is 6 November 2003. The Chandra Fellow
appointments are expected to begin on or about 1 September 2004. Women and
members of minority groups are strongly encouraged to apply.
