      ------ MEETING ABSTRACT ------

In 1962, Scorpius X-1 became the first X-ray source discovered outside
the Solar System. In the 50 years since, X-ray binaries have proven to
be important for studies of fundamental physical processes such as
mass accretion and jet formation. Contemporary X-ray satellites
provide detailed spectroscopic studies of individual Galactic black
hole and neutron star binaries, as well as population studies of
low-mass X-ray binaries in globular clusters, high-mass X-ray binaries
and ultra-luminous X-ray sources in starburst galaxies. This meeting
will celebrate the startling discovery of Scorpius X-1, highlight the
latest results in our understanding of the formation of black holes,
neutron stars and X-ray binaries, as well as the use of X-ray binaries
for testing the laws of physics in the extreme environment close to
black holes and neutron stars.

Item 2: Cosmic Kaleidoscope Meeting - First Announcement
======================================================================

We are organizing a meeting titled "The Cosmic Kaleidoscope: Pulsars
and Their Nebulae, Supernova Remnants and More - A Conference in
Memory of Okkie de Jager" to be held from 13 - 17 August 2012:

http://fskbhe1.puk.ac.za/knp2012/

As the title suggests, the meeting will focus on the high-energy
astrophysics topics that were strongly influenced by Okkie's work.
These topics will include high-energy aspects of pulsars, pulsar
wind nebulae, supernova remnants, and absorption by extragalactic
background light, with emphasis on their multi-wavelength properties,
as well as new VHE detection and detector concepts. The exciting
new results from Fermi, HESS, MAGIC, and VERITAS are creating a
fast-evolving landscape yielding as many new puzzles as answers to
old questions. We aim to celebrate the science that was dear to
Okkie, in one of his favorite places, Kruger National Park, South
Africa. Kruger Park (http://www.sanparks.org/parks/kruger/) is world
famous and the second largest wild animal reserve in Africa.

The Skukuza camp, where the conference will be held, is the largest
and most modern camp in the park and offers a wide range of activities
and game viewing.

In order to guarantee excellent scientific quality for the conference,
the Science Organizing Committee (SOC) is soliciting abstracts for
consideration as contributed talks or posters at the meeting. The
deadline for abstract submission is 1 March 2012, and the selected
contributions will be announced by 1 April 2012, at which point
formal registration for these participants will open.

Space is very limited at this meeting, with accommodation space in
the Skukuza camp for only around 100 people. If our block booking
is filled by the selected participants before the accommodation
deadline, we will start a waiting list. There are also options for
accommodation outside the park or in other camps. We hope that you
will be able to join us at this highly anticipated event.

Item 3: Workshop on Tidal Disruption Events and AGN Outbursts
======================================================================
Workshop on Tidal Disruption Events and AGN Outbursts
to be held at
         ESAC, Madrid, Spain
from
          June 25-27th 2012.

Over the next few years, sensitive, large-area, surveys will come on-line
and likely detect extragalactic flares in large numbers. The aim of
this workshop is to bring together theorists and observers for a
review of previous observations and state-of-the-art modelling, and
help to develop a strategy for the identification and follow-up of
future events.
